The International Association of EMTs and Paramedics (IAEP) stands in solidarity with the nearly 15,000 nurses on strike in New York City who are fighting to secure safer conditions for nurses and patients alike.

The nurses, represented by the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), and their supporters will be picketing outside the Mount Sinai, Montefiore and NewYork-Presbyterian hospitals in the city beginning on January 12.

IAEP Local 20 Empress EMS, which represents over 1,000 EMS professionals in the New York metro area, has commended the nurses for their commitment to advocating for patient safety and refusing to back down when management refuses to listen to the warnings of professionals.

“As frontline healthcare workers, paramedics, EMTs, and nurses share the same mission: providing safe, timely, and high-quality care,” said IAEP Local 20 President Jennifer McSorley. “We also share the same challenges, including understaffing, increasing workloads, burnout, and systems that often prioritize cost savings over patient and employee safety.

While the IAEP’s collective bargaining agreement forbids union members from participating in the strike while in uniform or on duty, many members have already gone out to support the nurses off the clock and in plain clothes.

The nurse’s decision to strike comes after the NYSNA and hospital management could not reach an agreement on contract negotiations that the union hoped would deliver them safer staffing ratios, guaranteed healthcare benefits for frontline nurses and protections from workplace violence.

The IAEP supports these nurses in their fight for improved working conditions. Each part of the healthcare community is crucial to the overall health and welfare of patients, and it is imperative that each and every member that serves within it is afforded the respect, resources and conditions that they deserve.

Solidarity to all!

Union Local Tax Issues

Federal law now requires that every local union file an annual information return—Form 990, 990-EZ, or 990-N—with the IRS.

If your local fails to file under this new requirement, your local will lose its tax-exempt status.
