The IAEP is proud to support The Fallen Hero Fund, or Connecticut Public Act No. 61, a new law that goes into effect this month to bring health insurance benefits to the surviving family members of EMS professionals and “first responders” defined under Connecticut law.

Public Act No. 61 expands the definition of “first responder” to an emergency medical technician, firefighter, paramedic or police officer, opening up our public sector Connecticut EMS members’ families to these benefits for the first time. Previously, this law only covered police officers in the state.

The legislation also amends state law to allow surviving family members of first responders who were covered by their health insurance at the time of their death to remain on that coverage for up to five years.

The IAEP is thrilled to see EMS providers being recognized for their incredible services and sacrifices, and applauds this effort to assist their families in unfathomably difficult times.

Union Local Tax Issues

Federal law now requires that every local union file an annual information return—Form 990, 990-EZ, or 990-N—with the IRS.

If your local fails to file under this new requirement, your local will lose its tax-exempt status.
