The new regional office building in Atlanta officially opened for business yesterday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by NAGE and IBPO members and staff, community leaders, and special guest, Georgia gubernatorial candidate Roy Barnes.

"This is a special day for our members in Georgia and across the country, this neighborhood, and the surrounding Atlanta community," said National President David J. Holway. "We have shown our commitment to our Georgia members by action, not merely by words. And it is also our hope that by putting our roots ever deeper here and by maintaining a strong law enforcement presence we can help revitalize this storied neighborhood."

National Vice President and IBPO Local 623 President Scott Kreher emceed the ceremony.

"This is a proud and important day for all of our members and for the families who live in this neighborhood," said Kreher. "Our union has a beautiful new building, and the families here have a neighbor who really cares about them and this area."

The former union office was razed to make way for the new two-story building. The atrium at the entrance of the building allows in abundant natural light and gives the building a very airy feel. Hardwood floors run throughout the building, except for offices, which have beige-colored carpeting. Individual offices on the first and second floors have numerous tall windows, making it unnecessary to turn on office lights during the day. A conference room toward the back of the building easily accommodates a crowd.

In addition to staff offices, the new union building also has a break room for police officers represented by IBPO, and office space for various Atlanta-area locals.

"We're very happy to be in the new building and have been working hard to ensure a smooth transition from our rental space to the new offices," said Dennis Hammock, Atlanta regional office director. "I think members are going to be proud to call this building home."
