Frequently Asked Questions About the IAEP

Q:      What happens if there is no clear winner at the end of the initial voting cycle?

A:      Per NLRB guidelines, if the IAEP, NEMSA, UEMSW or the No-Union option do not receive 50% plus 1 vote out of all those who took part in the election there must be a run-off election to decide the results.  The run-off election would not include choices who do not receive a pertinent percentage of the votes, i.e. if two members vote for no-union that option would not appear on the run-off ballot.

According to the National Labor Relations Board:

“Where, on the other hand, there are three or more choices on the ballot, an election in which (after any determinative challenges have been resolved) none of the choices receives a majority of the valid votes cast is considered an inconclusive election. In such case, the Regional Director should conduct a runoff election between the choices on the original ballot that received the highest and the next highest number of votes.”

Q:         Who is the IAEP?

A:         The International Association of EMTs and Paramedics is a division of the National Association of Government Employees / SEIU Local 5000.  We represent thousands of EMS professionals across the country, with over 50 locals in more than 30 states.  The IAEP has been a proven labor leader for over 30 years. Our entire membership is comprised solely of EMS professionals.

Q:         Why did the IAEP intervene in the election?

A:         The IAEP was contacted by numerous EMS professionals within the 'core' group and asked to participate in the election process.  After collecting interest cards, the IAEP filed as an intervener to secure a position on the ballot moving forward.

Q:         Is the IAEP in favor of removing the IFT Division from the bargaining unit?

A:         No.  Simply put, the IAEP is not in favor of dividing you and your fellow members by 'carving out' any portion of the bargaining unit.  The IAEP's position has and will remain that the historic bargaining unit is the appropriate unit for this group and in any elections in the future.

Q:          What does IAEP membership really offer me?

A:          The IAEP offers its members specialized servicing.  Our national representatives are EMS professionals themselves and understand the specific needs and interests of EMTs and paramedics.  Your needs will be addressed appropriately because they know what you deal with on a daily basis.

Q:          What is the current IAEP dues structure?

A:          The IAEP’s current dues are set at $11.20 per pay period for full-time employees and $9.20 per pay period for part-time employees.  Part-time employees pay dues only during weeks that they work.

Q:          What do I get for paying union dues?

A:          Union dues go towards the many resources available to you as members of the IAEP.  These resources include the IAEP’s team of skilled national representatives, who are all EMS professionals themselves, as well as the IAEP’s top-notch labor attorneys who are available to help you with work related issues.  Dues also go towards the national and local lobbyists who are promoting a pro-EMS agenda around the country.  For a more detailed list of resources please review the ‘benefits’ section of this web site.
