Polk County EMS Professionals Respond to I-4 Disaster

January 10, 2008

EMS professionals with Polk County EMS of Florida, members of IAEP Local R5-917, responded to the scene of yesterday’s deadly accidents on a stretch of Interstate I-4 that runs through Polk County.

Local R5-917 members were among the first responders to the scene of these accidents, which were caused by zero visibility conditions created by fog and smoke. These EMS professionals helped to rescue and aid many motorists who were injured and possibly trapped in their vehicles. Over 38 people were sent to the hospital with injuries and at least three motorists were killed.

“Without any concern for their personal safety, Local R5-917 members worked tirelessly to help every motorist they could,” said IAEP National Representative Steve Weigand. “These accidents demonstrate the dangerous and strenuous conditions that EMS professionals face everyday.”

Upon arriving at the scene, these EMS professionals worked under dangerous conditions that included a complete lack of visibility and multiple burning vehicles.

"Everything came to a halt," Robert Ellison, who was driving east on the highway about 6 a.m., told The Tampa Tribune and WFLA-TV. "You can't see your hand in front of your face."

The IAEP salutes these members for their continued dedication and service to the residents of Polk County.
